Astro 320 debuts sophisticated map drawing capabilities on its vibrant 2.6” 65k color sunlight-readable display. A built-in shaded relief world wide basemap depicts basic geographical features. Additional mapping detail can improve hunt planning by using the internal memory or a microSD™ card slot for optional products such as BirdsEye™ Satellite Imagery and topographic maps. BirdsEye Satellite Imagery is a subscription-based service that allows aerial views. A refined user interface streamlines what is displayed on screen by allowing dogs that are outside the current zoom level to have their location notated in the display’s margin. The user can also choose the amount of each dog’s tracklog displayed, or toggle it off completely, to avoid cluttering the map.

This rugged, waterproof handheld has a 3-axis electronic compass allowing hunters to accurately view the dog’s position when holding the Astro 320 at any angle, an internal vibration motor that supports silent alerts in addition to audible tones, and a keypad lock. With two included antenna options the extended range antenna can increase the tracking range by up to 30%. Thanks to the redesigned antenna, the maximum range between the Astro 320 and a Garmin tracking collar can achieve up to nine miles in flat, unobstructed terrain. Like its predecessor, the Astro 320 can track up to ten dogs at once, and is fully compatible with Garmin’s DC 20, DC 30, and DC™ 40 dog tracking collars.

HOW DOES THE GARMIN ASTRO GPS SYSTEM WORK?
The Garmin Astro system has two components:
The Handheld Receiver Unit, which looks like a walkie-talkie; and the Transmitter Unit, which is mounted on a collar.
The transmitter unit on the collar picks up a signal from the satellites and "knows" its location. It then transmits a radio signal to your handheld receiver with its exact location. Your receiver "knows" where you are and now it knows where the dog is, so it plots the dog's location on your screen in relation to where you are.
The Astro can track up to ten dogs per handheld receiver at once, and the transmitter collar gives location updates as often as every five seconds. In flat, unobstructed terrain, the Astro transmitter and receiver have an effective range of up to five miles. Battery life is 17 hours on the rechargeable collar transmitter and greater than 20 hours on the handheld receiver, which is powered by two AA batteries.
FULL FEATURED HANDHELD GPS
Besides being a state-of-the-art dog tracking device, the Astro is also a full-featured handheld GPS based on the GPSMAP 60CSx - Garmin's flagship outdoor navigator with a sunlight-readable color display and a highly sensitive GPS receiver that works even under a thick tree canopy or in deep canyons. So when the hunting season is over, the Astro can pull double-duty for hiking, boating, or car trips.
OPTIONAL MAP FUNCTIONALITY
The Astro GPS handheld receiver has a card slot that allows users to insert optional pre-programmed topo maps or road maps, which can be invaluable in an unfamiliar area. Topo maps give hunters an idea of the most productive areas to hunt, while road maps feature the same basic functions as an automotive GPS navigation unit - even in rural areas. The optional road map data can also give directions to motels, gas stations, restaurants, and even veterinarians.
CALCULATER AND CALENDAR
The Astro also calculates area, which is ideal for determining the acreage of a piece of property or the exact size of a food plot. The unit has location-specific sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset tables (ideal for determining legal hunting hours) and a hunting and fishing calendar that suggests the best times to be out in the field. |
