SMARTWORK WATER FORCE AND SWIM-BY
BY EVAN GRAHAM |

 |
The SmartWork "Water Force & Swim-by" DVD by Evan Graham brings to life the information on Water Force and Swim-By offered in Smartwork for Retrievers Volume I: Basics and Transition.
Water Force is the compelling and influence that causes motion of the dog to enter the water and is the final phase of force fetch. Evan treats water force as a component of force fetch because water force training comes closer to that description. No matter how much your dog appears to love water, unless retrieving in water becomes a structured function a lot of things can happen that impede efficient retrieving. Water forcing clears the air about typical problems dogs usually tend to run into, and provides a terrific co-benefit: They end up with an even better attitude about water than they began with!
Swim-By is the controlled return of your retriever in water, during which the handler requires the dog to take a "more-water" return to enforce water/shoreline discipline
Because of its DVD format, Evan has expanded the information to be more in depth. The dogs trained on this video are at this level of training where water force and swim-by would normally be taught.
These dogs do the same things, make the same types of mistakes, and are given the same appropriate kind of instruction typical of dogs at this age and level of development.
These are not just someone's finished dogs going through basic level work, and doing it perfectly. They will behave a great deal like your young dog is apt to behave when doing these skills early on in their training.
The first in a line of video modules, "Water Force and Swim-by" follows the Smartwork method faithfully, and does not gloss over details, or vital issues like pressure and simplification. It is not intended to replace the Smartwork text, but rather to augment it to provide you with the best possible instruction on these two vitally important topics.

A Brief Biography of Author Evan Graham
Evan Graham is a retired professional dog trainer, and ex-paramedic. He now works as a Registered Nurse in a metropolitan hospital. He is married and has four children and nine grandchildren.
He is also a columnist for The Retriever Journal, and has trained and handled many dogs that earned positions on the National Derby List, including five in a single year; one of them being number three with seven wins. At least three of the dogs he trained as a professional became Field Champions. The driving force for his development of the Smartwork method was the belief that one can never know how good any dog is whose Basics were not thorough. As a portion of method refinement, he maintained a strong focus on efficient, effective Basics. |
